Students facing financial hardship often encounter barriers beyond the classroom, including food insecurity, housing instability, and limited access to academic resources. These challenges disrupt learning and increase the risk of delayed graduation or withdrawal.
According to Hunger Free Colorado, more than 1 in 7 Colorado households with children experience food insecurity, a condition strongly linked to lower academic performance and attendance issues.
When students struggle to meet basic needs, schools and families are forced into crisis response rather than long-term planning. Community organizations frequently step in to help but often lack consistent funding to support students throughout their educational journey.
Who Is Most Affected
Students from low-income households, students of color, and first-generation learners are disproportionately impacted. In the Denver metro area, these populations are more likely to face compounded barriers that affect both academic persistence and long-term opportunity.
